The Seven First Words of Christ After the Resurrection
Because Easter is not the end, it is the beginning of our mission.
We often sit with the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ. They are deep, reflective, and honestly, a little heavy. As they should be.
But Easter morning tells a different story.
The stone is rolled away. The tomb is empty.
And suddenly, faith is no longer just about sacrifice.
It is about movement.
Not just reflection, but direction.
Not just looking back, but stepping forward.
If the Cross teaches us how to surrender,
the Resurrection teaches us how to live again with purpose.
So what did Jesus say first after rising?
Not random words. Not filler lines.
These were words that launch a mission.
⸻
1. “Peace be with you.” John 20:19
Everything begins here.
Not with pressure. Not with expectations.
But with peace.
Jesus meets His disciples right in their fear and confusion, and the first thing He gives is not a task, but calm.
Because let’s be honest. A restless heart cannot carry a clear mission.
So before anything else, receive this.
God is not rushing you. He is grounding you.
⸻
2. “Do not be afraid.” Matthew 28:5, 10
Now that you have peace, it is time to move.
Fear will still be there. That does not magically disappear after Easter.
But it no longer gets to lead.
You might feel unready. You might feel unsure.
Welcome to the club. The first disciples felt the same.
But the Resurrection is God’s way of saying,
“You can go now. I’ve already handled the worst part.”
⸻
3. “Why are you weeping?” John 20:15
This was asked to Mary Magdalene, and honestly, it hits close to home.
Sometimes we are still holding on to sadness, disappointment, or loss…
even when God is already doing something new.
Mary thought the story had ended.
She did not realize she was standing right in the middle of a miracle.
And sometimes, so are we.
This is not Jesus dismissing pain.
This is Jesus gently saying,
“Look again. I am still here.”
⸻
4. “Go and tell my brothers.” Matthew 28:10
Here it is. The first clear instruction.
Go.
Not later. Not when everything makes sense.
Not when your life is perfectly put together.
Just go.
Share what you have seen. Share what you have experienced.
Even if all you can say is, “I encountered something real.”
That is already enough to begin.
⸻
5. “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20:22
Because let’s be real. Mission sounds great… until you realize you actually have to do it.
Good news. You are not doing it alone.
Jesus does not just send people out and hope for the best.
He gives His Spirit.
Which means your strength is not just your own.
Your courage is not just self-made.
You are being helped more than you realize.
⸻
6. “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” John 20:21
This is where things become personal.
You are not just watching the story anymore.
You are part of it.
Your life is not random.
Your relationships are not accidental.
Your current season is not wasted.
You have been placed exactly where you are for a reason.
And yes, that includes your workplace, your family, your circle, even your struggles.
⸻
7. “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29
Spoken to Thomas the Apostle, but meant for all of us.
Because most of the time, we want clarity before commitment.
We want the full plan. The guaranteed outcome. The step by step guide.
But faith does not work like that.
Sometimes, the next step only becomes clear after you take it.
And somehow, that is where the blessing is.
So what does this mean for us now?
The Seven Last Words help us reflect.
The Seven First Words help us move.
Easter is not just something we celebrate once a year.
It is something we are meant to live out daily.
So here is a simple challenge.
If Christ has given you peace, do not stay stuck.
If He has called you, do not stay silent.
If He has risen, do not stay where you were.
Following Jesus Christ is not just about being saved.
It is about being sent.
And the Resurrection is your signal.
You can stay at the empty tomb…
or you can step into the life that comes after it.
Choose to rise.
