From Compassion to Conflict: Reflections on Iligan’s Changing Heart

RRhoie·

A pregnant's reflection to the Iliganons after the flood.

I’ve been sitting with this for the past few days.

It’s striking how quickly our emotions and focus can shift. One moment, we were united. People are coming together as a community to help those affected by the floods-- doing what they could, raising funds, sharing posts to inspire others. The newsfeed felt hopeful, even beautiful.

Then, almost instantly, everything changed.

As political tensions in the Philippines began to heat up, the tone shifted. The same spaces that once reflected compassion became filled with mockery, driven by differences in beliefs and ideals.

And this happened only weeks after the flood.

It made me realize that, in some ways, calamities carry a strange kind of grace. They reveal the tenderness and generosity people are capable of. But at the same time, they also expose deeper wounds, why many are angry, sensitive, and weary when it comes to government and politics. Often, our activism is not just opinion. It is a cry for help, no matter where we stand.

Tonight reminded me of something heavier: many families are still far from recovery. Someone from our community lost their home, and until now, they still don’t have a dignified place to stay. And yet, it feels like the world has already moved on.

There is frustration in knowing that rebuilding takes time. But there is also quiet comfort in believing that help is still on the way.

Maybe this is also a reminder, not just for those who were displaced physically, but for all of us whose focus may have shifted along the way.

I hope our disagreements lead us somewhere better, not just toward more division and hardened hearts. I hope we don’t reach the point where pride becomes the fuel behind every argument. Perhaps before we speak, we can first take a moment to steady our hearts, to speak with care, and to listen with sincerity.

These are just my thoughts tonight. Maybe this is how God is guiding me as I approach Lent, especially as someone deeply engaged in political conversations.

I pray that our words may be blessed with grace, and that our understanding continues to grow.
